With a little help from Leonard Cohen's classic lyrics, artist *somersetholmes conjures Suzanne - lady of the harbour, a stunningly vivid take on the subject of mermaids. ( Suggested by VelCake and Featured by SRaffa )

Amazing gallery you have!:worship:
Just out of curiosity, about how many hours do you put in a drawing? :work:

Ah well now that's a question not easily answered Brian, simply because I have a weird system where by I work on many different drawings at the same time, it's an inspiration thing with me and stops me losing interest...I've probably got the attention span of a small bug you see  although at a rough guess maybe 30 hours sounds about right to complete one drawing!...Oh just been checking out your gallery too WOW! your work is truly outstanding, it's a real honour to meet you my friend :salute:

The honor is all mine, my friend! And it sounds just like me. Usually I have 2-3 different drawings to jump between.:iconblakelord:

Yeah I think you need a variety of pieces to jump between working with pencils or else the tedium sets in pretty quick doing such detailed work ;)

I think that much of your other work is quite good, just not this one. Sorry it came across like it did. In rereading it, I was way too harsh.

The vast majority of it is stunning, but her face looks off. It looks like it is on slightly different planes... I think her eyes are what is causing it, as they seem to be looking at two different things. And the mouth seems just the teeniest bit off of the plane of the rest of the face.

The hair and the tail detail are amazing, though!

Thank you for your input although I disagree with your critic, as well as being a fantasy image it is also a portrait of a real person and the likeness is pretty much spot on...beauty was my aim here not flawless perfection

Suzanne was written and published as a poem by Leonard Cohen, after which he set it to music and sang it. Neil Diamond covered it.

I first heard the Neil Diamond version too.

Our Lady of the Harbour, or Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, is a cathedral in Montreal, Cohen's home town. Presumably, one could see it from Suzanne's place by the river.

Thank you my friend, yeah knowing this I really should have stated it and credited Leonard Cohen as the author of the song..although I have to say I prefer Neil Diamonds vocals.
Any way I have amended my description to reflect this, thanks again also for the interesting info on the origins of the piece :)

Yeah is more a long eel-like shape rather than a rigid fish tail...nice to be a bit different I think :)
